Runway Reviews: Elie Saab Couture, Givenchy Couture

http://www.fashionweekdaily.com — Elie Saab: The fairytale dust—via elaborate beading and ornate detailing—was done with a light, frothy touch on Elie Saab’s latest couture confections. Icy hues of dove bluish grey gowns, glimmering with monochromatic beading, gave way to a series of ivory creations, following champagne shades and a darker coterie of navies and blacks. Full sleeves, done mostly in sheer fabrications and dappled with lacey washes of pearlescent embellishment, lent a delicate princess effect to the collection as a whole. The cocktail frocks’ briefer hemlines, chic sheer paneling at the clavicle and wispy notes of lace were paired with delicately narrow-strapped Mary Janes hovering atop platforms, and punctuated the trailing sheer trains and translucent, sometimes billowing sleeve details of the full-on gowns. Skinny floral-festooned belts on a number of the gowns were a tad precious, driving the elaborate yet delicately ethereal effect just over the luxe ledge. In contrast to Saab’s last couture season, where everything—the draping, the length of the thigh slits, the doled-on beading—felt wrought with a darker aura, perhaps not preferably so. Despite getting a smidge too saccharine for a brief moment or two, looks like a Nordic-inflected ice queen works for Saab.
